Perched atop Rose Hill with commanding views of the harbor, the Greek Revival mansion at 478 Harbor Road is one of Southport, Connecticut’s most distinguished historic properties. Built circa 1831 by shipping magnate William Webb Wakeman, this breathtaking estate spans nearly 6,000 square feet and features seven bedrooms, soaring ceilings, wide-plank floorboards, and exquisite original molding details throughout.
William Webb Wakeman, born in Southport in 1799, was the son of Jesup Wakeman, a prominent local businessman. From an early age, he worked alongside his father, eventually establishing his own shipping enterprise that grew into a flourishing trade network stretching from New York to Savannah and Galveston. By the mid-19th century, he expanded into the East Indian and China trade under the firm Wakeman, Dimon & Co. His business empire also included a fleet of steamships, many of which were commissioned by the federal government to transport troops and equipment during the Civil War.
The estate’s hallmark Greek Revival architecture is defined by its grand portico, supported by four fluted columns reminiscent of the designs popularized by Minard Lafever and Asher Benjamin in the 1830s and 1840s. The three-bayed facade is crowned with a pedimented gable featuring a striking Palladian window. Inside, the home showcases intricate millwork, bold roll moldings, and classical motifs of seashells and acanthus leaves—hallmarks of its era’s refined craftsmanship.
Magnificent views of the harbor, Long Island Sound, and the nearby golf course can be enjoyed from the home’s abundant windows, French doors, and expansive bluestone terraces. The property also includes an attached pool solarium for year-round enjoyment.
Following William’s passing in 1869, his widow, Mary Catherine, who outlived all six of their children, continued to reside at Rose Hill. The estate later passed to their descendant, Charles M. Taintor, who developed a small farm on the surrounding land. Over time, successive owners have carefully restored and expanded the property while maintaining its historic integrity.
Beyond its architectural and historical significance, Rose Hill is deeply tied to Southport’s identity. The name originates from the wild Rambler roses that once adorned the stone walls lining the harbor’s west end. Today, remnants of these historic blooms can still be found throughout the area, a living tribute to the estate’s past.
