For over a century, Brooklawn Country Club has been a cornerstone of Fairfield County’s social and athletic life. Inspired by the rise of private clubs across America, a group led by Dr. Ira DeVer Warner founded Brooklawn Country Club in 1895. The club was incorporated as the Brooklawn Club Corporation, with the goal of creating a space for sport and socialization.
At the same time, Clapp Spooner, a financier and former mayor of Bridgeport, was developing Brooklawn Park, a residential enclave for the city’s elite. The club leased 60 acres within this development, establishing a clubhouse in a converted farmhouse.
Golf was still gaining popularity in America when Brooklawn was founded. Initially, members played on a simple nine-hole course, but demand soon led to expansion. By 1911, additional land allowed for an 18-hole course. In 1916, the farmhouse clubhouse was replaced with a larger structure that remains a key part of the club today. The club has welcomed notable visitors, including President William Howard Taft, an honorary member.
In 1930, golf course architect A.W. Tillinghast redesigned the course, elevating it to championship caliber. In 1932, members approved the construction of a swimming pool by a single vote.
In 1897, Brooklawn installed its first bowling alley, with pins initially set by hand. Over the years, the club expanded its offerings, adding baseball, tennis, archery, and trap shooting. The facilities have continued to evolve, now including a modern tennis center, platform tennis courts, and a full recreational complex.
Brooklawn has hosted five USGA championships, and many legendary golfers have played its course. Gene Sarazen, who began his career as an assistant pro at the club, went on to become one of only five golfers to win all modern major championships. He still holds the course record, shooting a 63 in 1938. In 1995, Tiger Woods visited the club, while still an amateur, to conduct a clinic. Attendees were stunned by his skill.
Today, Brooklawn continues to be a destination for golf, tennis, swimming, and social events, honoring its history while adapting to meet the needs of its members.
